Mozambique has had a chequered history. The first inhabitants were San hunter and gathers followed by the Bantu speaking people who migrated from northern Africa to settle in the plateau and coastal areas. Vasco da Gama claimed Mozambique as a Portuguese colony in 1498, and it remained so until the country’s independence in 1975. Civil War destroyed much of the beautiful country between 1976 and 1992. Since then there has been huge efforts to recover from the conflict and rebuild the country, with tourism being a vital part of the economic process.
